This tour combines Orangutans with a devastating example of forest destruction by illegal Gold Mining. Only those interested in the mal-effects of such practices should go, as it is a long day.

Leave at 0700 after breakfast for a four hour trip up the Sekonyer river to see gold and sand mining. Miners live mainly in Kumai or surrounding villages and use primitive pump and sluice methods of extraction of gold and silica. The gold is washed off on rough matting on the sluice, using Mercury for settling. The sand extracted is grey with elements such as Ziconium bringing high prices in Hong Kong. On return you will call at Camp Leakey to take in the feeding at 1400. Camp Leakey claims to be the longest, continuous biological experiment in the world. The Camp has been made famous by the renowned Orangutan scientisit Professor Dr Birute Galdikas. At this unique place, now known to be the best orangutan experience in the world, you will experience unique sights of these amazing primates. Later in the evening on the run back to the Lodge, you should see many groups of roosting primates including Proboscis and Macaques and maybe if you are lucky Langurs. Dinner at the Lodge after a full day.

Lunch on the boat is at around 1330 when you will leave for The Tandjung Harapan feeding Station for the feeding at 1500. Here also there is a large Alpha male.
Take an early morning bird walk around the Rimba Lodge; there is a special bird walk at the end of the lodge. Breakfast is at 0730, Leave 0830 to the Pesalat reafforestation centre. The walk in from the river takes 45 minutes through swamp forest on a board walk, past a small medicinal plant area to “The Friends of the National Park” reforestation area (severely burned in 2006). This is a very good birding and walking area; also Clouded Leopard and Sun Bear spoor has been seen here. For only US$ 5 you can choose and plant a tree.

At around 1130 you should be back at the boat for your visit to the famous Camp Leakey (possibly the most famous place for Orangutan Research in the world) having lunch on the way. A short visit to The Education Centre there is a must; also you may see Agile Gibbons and pigs in the camp. You then proceed to the Feeding Centre. Your guide will carry water but you should take no food. You should eat no food or drink water near an Orangutan. Humans transmit diseases to Orangutans; thus please do not initiate contact (for their sakes). Occasionally an Orangutan may take you by the hand – relax and enjoy it. Camp Leakey feeding is funded by donations to The Orangutan Foundation International USA (Professor Dr Birute Galdikas). Then you walk back to the boat for a great trip home in the evening through many roosting Proboscis Monkeys

After dinner at the Lodge your Guide will show a DVD about the famous Orangutan at Camp Leakey KOSASI and his mentor Birute Galdikas.

This half day tour suits those arriving before midday at Pangkalan Bun. After you have been picked up at the airport by our Guide you will proceed to the port of Kumai to board our River Boat (klotok). The trip to The Rimba Orangutan Eco Lodge is two hours up the Sekonyer River and is pure magic as you sit on the top deck. Depending on time, you can check into your room at the Lodge where you can have lunch or if later you may have lunch on the boat on the way up en route to the orangutan feeding station. The Tandjung Harapan feeding station is at the park Headquarters only 15 minutes by klotok from the Lodge and begins at around 1500 hours. Here you will see your first Orangutans – a real thrill.
